Inmates protest alleged brutality- Chamgang central jail

Accusing an officer-in-charge of the Chamgang central jail in Thimphu of brutal beatings, inmates have staged a protest last night. The video is making the rounds on social media. Police are denying the allegation.

In the almost two-minute video, prisoners are seen in the open, protesting against the alleged brutality. They claim that they are treated like animals. According to the person recording the video, officers in the jail mishandle them most of the time. “They treat us like animals,” he said.

Another person said after the new officer took charge, he has been mistreating the prisoners, irrespective of their age. “He uses abusive words to scold us. While going out, he takes us one by one and beats us,” he said.

However, according to the police, the protest broke out after the officers on duty seized their phones. Police also claimed that some inmates were in possession of drugs. Police suspect that they are getting the drugs through their visitors.
