NA dissects ACC’s annual report

While deliberating the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) annual report 2011 today, the members of the National Assembly said, the report needs to reflect more details of cases the ACC have investigated. Moreover, the MPs said, the investigation involving high profile people are taking longer.

The Lhamoi Zingkha-Trashiding MP, Hemant Gurung said it is important to know the duration of a corruption case. He said, in small corruption cases, the people are penalised, and made to refund but the investigation involving high profile people are taking a long time. “There is no equity. That’s why we need a time frame for each corruption cases,” said MP Hemant Gurung.

Dramedtse-Ngatshang MP, Ugyen Wangdi, said ACC have mentioned in their report that they carry out investigation without any fear and hesitation. “What we heard is that ACC is not carrying out the investigation of corruption cases in free and fair manner,” he said. He also said it is important for ACC to follow the law. “The person involved in the corruption should be treated as innocent until proven guilty. We heard from a few accused that their rights are not respected,” said MP Ugyen Wangdi.

The members also said the ACC need to resolve the remaining cases at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Speaker, Yangkhu Tshering Sherpa said, to prevent corruption, it is important for the ministries, organizations and agencies to support ACC. He said ACC should provide details in their report, of the organizations that have not been supportive.
