Farm road for Bakalemshing and Sazala villages- Samdrup Jongkhar

People of Bakalemshing and Sazala villages in Phuentshogthang Gewog of Samdrup Jongkhar can soon have access to a farm road. The long tiring days of travelling on foot will soon be history.

It has been about a month since the construction of the farm road began.  As of now, more than one kilometre of the 4.5-kilometre stretch has been cleared.

With this development happening, people of Bakalemshing and Sazala villages are already looking forward to an enhanced livelihood. They want to construct better houses and go for commercial vegetable farming.

Today, locals walk for almost two hours to get to their villages from the nearest road point in Samdrupchhoeling chiwog.

“Without a farm road, we have to carry our patients to reach them to the hospital. It is a challenging task. Things would be better if there is a road,” said Borang, from Phuentshogthang Gewog in Samdrup Jongkhar.

“Without any load, it takes us an hour from the road point. But with loads, the journey takes more than two hours,” added Sonam Zangmo, from the same village.

“After we are connected to a farm road, I am planning to construct a decent house. At the moment, I am staying in a hut because, without a road, we are not able to transport the construction materials,” added Sonam, also from the same village.

Besides, an access to the road will also ease transportation of oranges, one of the main cash crops for the 10 households of Bakalemshing and Sazala.

The Gewog Administration is spending around Nu 3 M to clear the farm road.
