Bhutanese bus collides head-on with a local truck at Berpeta Assam

Seven people were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in Sarbhog under Barpeta district, Assam in India. The Bumpa Transport Service bus was heading towards Samdrup Jongkhar from Thimphu when it collided head-on with a local truck at around 5.00 pm yesterday.

According to the Road Safety and Transport Authority, the bus ferrying 33 passengers including the driver left for Samdrup Jongkhar at 6:30 am from Thimphu bus terminal. It is the scheduled service operating between Thimphu and Samdrup Jongkhar.

Immediately after the accident, the Sorbhog police had evacuated 7 passengers to the nearest local hospital out of which the driver had sustained fractures and was kept admitted while the other 6 passengers with minor injuries were discharged and kept under Sorbhog PS with other passengers and were transhipped later by the transit bus sent from Gelegphu to Samdrupjongkhar.

Road Safety and Transport Authority on hearing about the accident called the operator and after confirming it to be true, asked the operator to send a bus from Gelegphu.

The police team headed by the Gelegphu Officer in charge moved to the accident site along with a bus in the late evening yesterday. A total of 28 passengers who were kept under the custody in Sorbhog PS were provided necessary support by the police officials till the bus sent from Gelephu arrived. The driver is still undergoing treatment in Barpeta hospital.
