Multi-sports complex in Bumthang nearing completion

In a few weeks time, Bumthang will have the country’s largest multi-sports complex. The construction of the structure is finally nearing completion after the completion date was extended twice, for various reasons since the works began in 2017.

The sports complex is situated right next to the new artificial turf football ground at Chamkhar, which is almost ready now. Except for some site development and clearing works, the multi-sports complex is as good as done. Bhutan Construction Private Limited’s owner, Ugyen Dorji who is the contractor for the project said, he will hand over the building to Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) soon.

“For now, our project is almost complete. Right now we are just doing the site development works, cleaning the building, some rectification works, a few touch-ups, plastering and all. So, within the next week or so, we are going to finish all the remaining works and we are going to hand it over to the BOC,” said Deepen Kumar Rai, the project engineer for Bhutan Construction Private Limited.

The completion date for the construction of the structure was extended as the foundation of the building had to be redesigned due to the marshy construction site. The other reason is due to the harsh winter months where all concrete works had to be stopped.

The BOC plans to handover the complex to Bumthang Sports Association by next week. The Bumthang Sports Association will outsource the purchase and set up sports equipment once the Association takes over the infrastructure from BOC. The complex will have a gym, table tennis courts, a basketball court and 3 badminton courts besides other spaces for an office and a conference hall. There will also be a rental space and a canteen.

The Nu 74 M project is funded by the government of India.
