Petrol price hits record high as fresh hike come into effect

A litre of petrol now costs Nu 70.91 in Thimphu, while diesel price, at Nu 69.41 per litre, too neared Nu 70 mark following the latest hike in fuel prices that came into effect yesterday.

The current petrol price is one of the highest since July 2014.

The increase in the fuel price is being attributed to the rising global crude oil prices.

The latest hike saw the price of petrol go up by Nu 1.80 to Nu 1.84 and diesel by Nu 1.29 to Nu 1.33 across the country.

The cheapest place to fuel cars at the moment is Gelegphu where both petrol and diesel cost less than Nu 65.

Amid increasing international crude oil prices since mid-August, prices of fuel have been on the rise across India. This has directly affected the prices of fuel in Bhutan.

The global crude oil price shot up since Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s largest oil exporters, cut its oil production in July. Saudi Arabia cut its oil production by an average of 2, 00,000 barrels per day.
