Insufficient drinking water in Gyalposhing

The residents of Gyalposhing in Monggar are faced with drinking water shortage for some time now. They claim that the newly constructed farm road at Wangling village in Drepoong has disrupted and dirtied their old water source, and the water supply from the alternative source at Tsangkhar is not sufficient to all the residents.

For Phuntsho Norbu, who lives near the Gyalposhing town, driving his van to fetch water from the town has become a daily routine.

“The water used to be clean before the farm road construction. We now have to fetch water from the town several times a day.”

The residents say there is a need for a reliable water supply in a place like Gyalposhing where heat becomes unbearable during summer.

“The water supply from the new source has less force and it does not reach the top floors of the building. So we have to come down to fetch water from the ground floor,” Phub Tshering, a resident, said.

At present, residents go to nearby streams to wash clothes and take bath. They also fetch water from the boreholes constructed recently by the Kurichu Hydropower Project near the town.

Locals said they cleaned the old water source several times but to no use.

The Monggar Dzongda Ugyen Sonam said the dzongkhag administration is trying to manage by supplying water on a timely basis.

He, however, denied the people’s claim of water not reaching the top floors. He also said the water source being muddy has been there long before the construction of the farm road.
