Incomplete blacktopping of Lauri GC road troubles residents, Samdrup Jongkhar

In Samdrup Jongkhar, the works to blacktop Lauri Gewog Centre road remain incomplete causing inconveniences to the villagers. The works have not resumed after the Samdrup Jongkhar District Administration terminated the contractor in March last year.

Man sentenced to nine years in prison for rape of 15-year-old girl

The Punakha District Court has sentenced Sangay from Guma Gewog in Punakha to nine years and one month in prison for raping a 15-year-old girl. The court passed the judgment last week. According to the judgment, the 53-year-old man had sexual intercourse with the female student during summer vacation in June last year and impregnated her. Although the man confessed to having sexual intercourse with the minor, he denied paternity of the unborn baby and requested a prenatal DNA test during the trial. If the paternity is confirmed, the girl can file a separate civil suit.

Nganglam-Gyalpozhing Highway to introduce load capacity checks

Starting tomorrow, officials will start monitoring the load capacity of vehicles passing along the Nganglam-Gyalpozhing highway through the Kuri-Gongri bridge. This is to prevent any incidents like those that happened before. They will begin by checking vehicle documents to confirm compliance. This decision was made during a meeting with stakeholders today. People in the eastern districts have been eagerly waiting for the Kuri-Gongri route to open.

Rainfall slightly below average in 2023: NCHM’s State of Climate Report

The country received a slightly below-normal rainfall compared to the long-term average, last year. According to the National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology or NCHM’s State of Climate Report 2023, the annual average rainfall was almost 1,800 millimetres in 2023. Rainfall is measured in millimetres to provide a standardised and uniform way to quantify it. The NCHM uses 20 meteorological stations across the country to collect rainfall data.

Inclusive toilet improves restroom accessibility for students with disabilities at Zhemgang PS

The recently inaugurated inclusive toilet at Zhemgang Primary School has been benefitting students with disabilities. The students no longer have to use regular toilets, which otherwise made visiting restrooms challenging. Now, since the inclusive toilets provide necessary assistance, visiting restrooms has become a comfortable experience.

Bongo farmers benefit from electric fences, seek more protected farmland

After reaping the benefits of installing electric fences on more than a hundred acres of land at Pakshikha, residents of Bongo Gewog in Chhukha are asking for more farmland to be enclosed with electric fences. The gewog is one of the areas in the district which sees a high rate of wildlife attacks on crops.  Accordingly, another project to fence some 60 acres of land is underway in the gewog.
