Orange growers in Zhemgang delighted as orange prices soar

Like other orange growing districts, orange growers in Zhemgang are fetching a good price this season. The villagers said the production is bountiful and they are earning double the amount compared to last season. Orange is one of the main sources of income for most villagers in the lower Zhemgang. 

Pork production high in Tsirang but residents facing shortage

Apart from vegetables, Tsirang is also known for producing huge quantities of livestock products such as pork. However, residents say there is no adequate pork for sale in their own market. This is because meat shop owners from Thimphu and other nearby districts buy pork straight away from piggery farms in the district at higher prices according to Damphu meat shop operators.

Gongdu Gewog in Monggar, which is one of the major cardamom-producing gewogs in the district is seeing a decline in the yield of the spice. This is because of fungal diseases and pest attacks. The drop in yield is particularly seen in Dagsa-Kumadzong Chiwog which produces a major share of Gongdu Gewog’s cardamom.

In recent years, Tobked Menchhu in Gasa has been gaining popularity alongside Gasa Tshachhu, especially among those dealing with migraine and joint pain. Visitors, some travelling from as far as Trashi Yangtse, come to soak in the medicinal spring. The spring is managed by a community forest management group in Khatoed Gewog.

Tsirang’s favourable climate encourages mass banana cultivation

Construction of water pump project delayed by more than one and half years in Monggar

In Monggar, residents of Shajula village at Kengkhar Gewog are disappointed with the slow progress of construction of a seven-stage water pump from Sungkari to the village. The eight-month project was initially supposed to be completed in June last year. However, due to cement factories shutting down amid COVID-19 lockdowns the contract duration was extended till January this year. The project worth a little more than 28.7 million ngultrum began in October 2021.

Commuters call for blacktopping of 10-km stretch between Mukhazor in Trashigang and Tshelingkhor in Pema Gatshel

Commuters travelling along the Trashigang-Samdrup Jongkhar highway are calling for a complete blacktop over the entire stretch of the road. Over 90 per cent of the widening and blacktopping work of the highway is complete. However, around 10 kilometres stretch between Mukhazor in Trashigang and Tshelingkhor in Pema Gatshel has remained without a blacktop for some years. Road users said it is inconvenient as the stretch is bumpy.

Dorji Lopen appoints new Kudrungs for Central Monastic Body

The Dorji Lopon has appointed three new Kudrungs for the Central Monastic Body. The three new Kudrungs are the Tshogchhen Kudrung for Thimphu, Shar Kudrung of Wangdue Phodrang and the Paro Kudrung. They were conferred dhar at the Punakha Dzong this morning coinciding with the Traditional Day of Offering.

Construction of flood protection walls along Serkangchhu and Berzamchhu in Trashi Yangtse expected in 13th FYP

If everything goes as planned, the residents of Trashi Yangtse town and its neighbouring areas will soon no longer have to worry about getting washed away by the unpredictable swelling of Serkangchhu and Berzamchhu. The Trashi Yangtse district administration is prioritising the construction of flood protection walls and safety measures in the 13th Five-Year-Plan. The residents are currently living in constant fear of floods due to the swelling of the streams.
