On the invitation of General Manoj Pande, the Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Batoo Tshering, the Chief Operations Officer of the Royal Bhutan Army is in India for a visit.

Korea Radio Promotion Association handed about USD 500,000 worth of broadcast equipment to BBS

Officials from the Korea Radio Promotion Association officially handed about USD 500,000 worth of equipment to the Bhutan Broadcasting Service today. The equipment including outdoor broadcasting equipment and an FM transmitter will be used for the upcoming parliamentary elections for better picture and reception qualities for television and radio respectively.  

HRH Gyaltshab Jigme Dorji Wangchuck hands over Tsamdro Use Thram to residents of Merak and Sakteng

His Royal Highness Gyaltshab Jigme Dorji Wangchuck handed over the Tsamdro Use Thram to 609 households of Merak and Sakteng Gewogs. His Majesty The King granted Tsamdro or pastureland as a Kidu to the highlanders. Earlier, Tsamdro was reverted to state land as per the Land Act 2007. 

Deki Lhazom- First Bhutanese female footballer to sign for a foreign club

Deki Lhazom is set to make history by becoming the first female footballer in the country to sign for a foreign club. Nicknamed “Tommy”, the young forward will be signing for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad football club. Deki is currently on her way to Saudi Arabia and is expected to sign her contract tomorrow.

Thasa chiwog in Laja Gewog requests for a bypass- Dagana

People of Thasa chiwog at Laja Gewog in Dagana are requesting for a bypass to connect the chiwog with the Tsirang-Wangdue highway. They said the bypass will shorten the travel distance by more than 27 kilometres while travelling to other parts of the country. The chiwog, which has 28 households, is an hour's walk from Burichhu in Tsirang.

Farmers stop cultivating winter chilli after poor yield and low price- S/Jongkhar

Chilli may become scarce in Samdrup Jongkhar this winter. This is because poor yield and low prices have forced farmers of Pemathang Gewog in the district to stop cultivating winter chilli. They started cultivating chilli on a commercial scale in 2020 after the country closed its border due to the pandemic. They are one of the main chilli producers in the district. 

Chhogley residents of Gasa hold onto traditional watermill considered blessed asset

From growing wheat, buckwheat and barley as a staple diet, the residents of a village at Khatoed Gewog in Gasa changed their farming pattern and added rice to the list over the years. But there is one thing they haven’t changed. It is the way they pound or grind the grains. Considered a blessed asset with intangible values, the villagers still prefer the traditional watermill over the modern grinding machine. However, maintaining the watermill has become a challenge as it breaks down due to frequent attacks by wild animals.

Maintaining the country’s carbon-neutral status on track – EV project

The government’s project to replace 300 taxis with electric vehicles is a success according to the EV project unit under the Prime Minister’s Office. The EV project has been able to get close to 200 taxis on the roads so far while orders for more than a hundred have yet to arrive. The Bhutan Sustainable Low Emission Urban Transport System is a project that is aimed at reducing carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuel. This is to maintain the country’s carbon-neutral status for all times to come.

Capacity of cold chain storage for life-saving vaccines increases by almost four-fold

Bhutan has been able to enhance the storage capacity for life-saving vaccines by more than threefold. The health ministry now has more than 560,000 litres of storage, up from less than 150,000 litres in 2019. And this was made possible with grant support from the government of Japan.
