Tharpaling monastery has yet to rebuild the fire-razed structure; the monastery’s road getting worn out

The Dratshang Lhuentshog is working on sanctioning around Nu 5 M to Tharpaling monastery in Bumthang to rebuild the monastery’s dining hall and kitchen burnt down in June last year. The monastery’s road is also in dire need of repair but the Roads Department has no immediate plans to repair it due to ongoing construction works at the monastery.

Judges undergo Trafficking in Persons training to identify and render fair justice for such cases

Law enforcement officials, prosecutors, and judicial officials are now expected to identify and render fair justice for cases related to Trafficking in Persons. The third and final phase of the training on Trafficking in Persons for judicial officials concluded in Phuentshogling, yesterday (24th December). The training was conducted by the Department of Law and Order, in collaboration with the Bhutan National Legal Institute, with support from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

A training to empower young people to become agents of change in communities

And to help do this efficiently, the UPSHIFT training was conducted in Gelephu for the youth volunteers of the YDF. The five-day training ends tomorrow.

Miss Bhutan 2022 leaves for US to compete in Miss Universe

Miss Bhutan 2022 Tashi Choden has left for the United States of America to compete in the 71st Miss Universe pageant 2022. She left today. This is the first time Bhutan is participating in the Miss Universe pageant. The international event will be hosted in New Orleans, Louisiana. 23-year-old Tashi is among the 86 contestants who will be competing for the title through the process of personal statements, in-depth interviews and various categories including evening gown and swimwear. According to the Miss Universe Organisation, the LIVE telecast of the final show will be broadcast on 14th January.

Artificial inoculation attracts farmers to venture into agarwood cultivation in Norbugang Gewog

Farmers of Norbugang Gewog in Pema Gatshel have been growing agarwood for many years as the wood fetches a good price. But the introduction of the artificial inoculation technique has attracted a lot of farmers to venture into agarwood cultivation. Artificial inoculation is found to effective and reliable method to stimulate agar or resin production in trees. Agarwood is used for incense, perfume and traditional medicine among others.

Wearing facemasks made mandatory at Phuentshogling Pedestrian Terminal

Wearing facemasks is now mandatory for all individuals entering and exiting the Pedestrian Terminal in Phuentshogling. While some have applauded the move, the decision which many claimed sudden and unexpected has also left a few residents worried. The new rule was implemented yesterday (23rd December).

Taxi Association comes to the rescue in EV NPL issue

The bank loans for the 31 taxi drivers wanting to procure electric vehicles under the EV project have finally been approved. Their loans had been rejected earlier due to high non-performing loans resulting from loan non-payment by the previous EV purchasers. The issue was resolved after the Bhutan Taxi Association cleared a portion of the due amount and brought down the NPL.

Three financial banks disburse education loan of Nu 8bn to 1,700 individuals in a month

The three financial banks namely, Druk Punjab National Bank, Bank of Bhutan and Bhutan National Bank have disbursed nearly eight billion Ngultrum worth of education loans to more than 1,700 applicants in a month. The banks had received more than 2,400 applicants. While some are still under process, a few did not fulfil the requirements. This comes after the Royal Monetary Authority allowed commercial banks to resume education loans last month.

Man sentenced to life for murdering his mother-in-law

The Supreme Court has sentenced a 34-year-old man from Punakha to life imprisonment for murdering his mother-in-law. The incident happened in Uesu Gewog of Haa in 2020. Upholding the High Court’s judgment, the Supreme Court convicted Kinley Gyaltshen of murder on Wednesday.
