Animal welfare groups call for stringent laws against acts of animal cruelty

Many a time, animals particularly dogs and cats have been the most common victims of road accidents. While there are not many cases reported with the police, the veterinary hospital in Thimphu on average receives over 100 cases every year. According to the hospital and animal welfare groups, the increase in such accidents is a result of poor enforcement of law towards animal cruelty.

Gasa hot spring protected against flood as Mochhu diversion project completes

Works to divert Mochhu from the Gasa hot spring is complete. The river for now is partially diverted from its main course through the newly constructed diversion channel. It will be fully diverted after examining the geological stability of the channel. The river diversion works were carried out to protect the Gasa hot spring from flooding.

25 EV public charging stations launched in six districts

Bhutan Sustainable low-emission Urban Transport System Project launched 25 Electric Vehicle (EV) public charging stations yesterday. The charging stations have been installed in 15 different locations in Haa, Paro, Punakha, Phuentshogling, Thimphu and Wangdue Phodrang. The project started in 2019 aims to replace 300 fossil fuel-driven taxis with EV taxis by next year. The project is instituted under the Prime Minister's Office. 

Bhutan’s maiden participation in Judo at the Tokyo Olympics

Ngawang Namgyel, 23, will be the first Bhutanese to represent in Judo competition at the Tokyo Olympics this summer. The Bhutan Judo Association received confirmation from the International Judo Federation about Ngawang’s selection through the wildcard entry.

NA adopts Tobacco Control (Amendment) Bill

The National Assembly through a majority vote passed the Tobacco Control (Amendment) Bill of Bhutan 2021 today. With the amendment of the Bill, individuals can now sell, buy and distribute tobacco and tobacco products in the country. 

Phuentshogling students struggle with online learning

Students in Phuentshogling continue to struggle with online learning as schools in the town remain closed amid lockdown. They have been learning online for more than two months now.
