As soon as the first case of COVID-19 was reported, the government announced the closure of all schools and educational institutions across the country. Then, it was all on Google Classrooms, e-learning on television and radio and distributing self-instructional materials (SIM). Some welcomed it as a new milestone and the beginning of a new wave of learning. But for some, the transition has been challenging and burdensome.

Prime Minister’s Office returns TVET programme to Labour Ministry

The Prime Minister's Office after almost two years, handed back the Technical and Vocational Education and Training or TVET to the Labour Ministry.  Since the program is with the Ministry for only about two weeks, Labour Minister said, there is no comprehensive plans for now. However, there will be a major reforms in the program.

No active case in the country after a year of the first COVID-19 case

It has been exactly a year since Bhutan reported the first case of coronavirus infection. Over the last year, the country recorded close to 900 confirmed cases of COVID-19. And today there is no active case of COVID-19 in the country with the lone case declared recovered in the last 24 hours.  

New weighbridge at the MDP to benefit truckers and exporters, Gelegphu

The Mini Dry Port (MDP) stockyard in Gelegphu is now equipped with a weighbridge. Truckers ferrying aggregates and boulders to Assam and Bangladesh will no longer have to visit the Custom weighbridge station for weighing their consignment after loading from the MDP stockyard anymore. Located below the new petrol pump along the Gelegphu-Sarpang highway at the new Industrial Service Centre in Gelegphu, the 100 MT weighbridge was inaugurated yesterday.

Building the capacity of Judges and judiciary officers to detect, identify and render fair justice to TIPs

Trafficking in Persons (TIPs) is a global concern, and Bhutan is no exception. But detecting and proving this crime is a challenge for law enforcement agencies due to the complex and sophisticated Modus Operandi (mode of operating). Towards building the capacity of detecting and identifying the TIPs' case and render fair justice, two-day training for judges and judiciary officers was conducted in Punakha which ended today.

Drivers affected by the 7-day mandatory quarantine from high-risk to low-risk districts

The seven-day mandatory quarantine for travellers from the high-risk districts to low-risk districts is here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future. But the measure is not without inconveniences. In Phuentshogling, switching of drivers at Sorchen has affected many drivers leaving load-carrying vehicles idle. However, the long porous border along the south means we might have to bear this inconvenience for now.

Bhutanese youth earning handsomely working at the MDP, Gelegphu

After the border gates were closed and restriction on the entry of labourers from the neighbouring states of India was imposed, Bhutanese youth have been taking up jobs at the Mini Dry Port (MDP) in Gelegphu. Around 18 youth have been working at the MDP for more than 10 months and making around Nu 50,000 to 60,000 a month.
