Over a Billion for Wangdue Phodrang Dzong Reconstruction

The government has received a total of over Nu. 1.3 billion for the reconstruction of Wangdue Phodrang Dzong. The construction works began this month. The project is expected to complete within five years, by December 2018.

School Autonomy: A new education policy

The Education Ministry’s new policy of granting autonomy to government schools will come into effect from this year’s academic session. This was discussed at the Dzongkhag Education Officer’s conference which ended on Friday evening. By granting autonomy to schools, the Education Ministry wants to achieve quality education.

ECB to revisit grey areas

The Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) will be revisiting Postal Ballot related issues, the role of Party workers and volunteers, among others in the Political process. The ECB have come up with more than 20 issues and recommendations, after their Learning from Experience programme. The programme was held across the Country, after the second parliamentary elections.

Erratic water supply in Gelegphu to be resolved

The erratic water supply in Gelegphu will be resolved soon. The thromde said they have installed bore wells in three different places to supply water without disruption. But permanent water supply network is yet to be in place which will depend on the availability of the resources.

Kagyu Monlam Chenmo ends in Bodhgaya

The 31st Kagyu Monlam Chenmo in Bodhgaya in India concluded yesterday with the offering of the butter lamp prayers. More than 10,000 devotees including monks and nuns attended the prayer ceremony.

One of the oldest religious festivals in the country, the Dagana Tshechu ended earlier this week. Daga Tshechu is now 304 years old. It is celebrated for five days associated with five local deities of Dagana. Each day of the tshechu begins with atsara invoking five deities. The last day of the tshechu concluded with unfolding of Neten Chudrug Thongdrel to the public.

Tobacco Control Act: Should we react?

The Tobacco Control Act 2012, which has been touted as draconian. The act is likely to come to focus again. The National Council has tabled the bill for discussion for the upcoming winter session. They are of the opinion that the Act has become ineffective and has led to black market.

ECB celebrates its eighth anniversary

It was on this day in 2006, the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) was established. As ECB observed its eighth anniversary, the Chief Election Commissioner, Dasho Kunzang Wangdi, said it is a time to reflect the achievements and redirect the focus towards building robust electoral system.

Draft guideline drawn to grant government schools autonomy

Granting autonomy to the government schools in the country is one of the new policies initiated by the Education Ministry. The objective is to empower schools to provide quality education. To implement this, a draft guideline on autonomous schools was tabled for deliberation at the Dzongkhag Education Officers’ conference in Thimphu, yesterday.

Man succumbs to stab injuries

A 27-year-old man, who was stabbed by some unidentified assailants in the early hours of Sunday morning, has died. The man is said to have succumbed to stab injuries on Tuesday, at the National Referral hospital.
