A handbook for Hindu devotees

The Hindu Dharma Samudaya, a religious organisation launched handbook for spiritual practices on Wednesday. It was launched by the Education Minister, Lyonpo Thakur Singh Powdyel.

BoB to repay, CEO apologises

After much hue and cry from the clients, the Bank of Bhutan (BoB) has finally decided to repay the late penalty fee that they had charged their clients with. The problem is mostly associated with the Consumer or Government Employee (GE) loan holders. The bank is already in the process of rectifying the problem. The Chief Executive Officer, with apologies, said that all clients who were charged late fee on this would be re-imbursed accordingly.

Dwindling orange yield worries farmers in Phuentsholing

For decades, oranges have been the main source of livelihood and cash income for the farmers in southern parts of Bhutan. But this is not any more. The orange yield has been falling year after year. Farmers are blaming changing weather pattern among many other factors for the dwindling orange yield.

Making use of plastic wastes

Use and sale of plastic bags are banned in Bhutan since 1999. Yet, it forms a significant part of the wastes generated today despite repeated efforts to control it. A 27-year-old woman in Yongsebji, in Dagana, has come up with a new idea to reuse the plastic wastes. Dhan Maya, a National Work Force labourer, is using the waste to knit plastic mats.

Living under constant threat

It’s been more than a year since the Institute of Electrical Engineering in Khuruthang, Punakha was flooded by the Punatshang Chu last year. Government has approved the Institute’s proposal to build a retention wall to protect the Institute but it is yet to be implemented.

24 years in prison for murder

17-year-old student boy has been sentenced to 24 years in prison by the Tsirang District Court for murdering a 24-year-old man on Friday. The incident occurred in April last year. The defendant, a class 11 student, stabbed a driver.

Not so promising season for apple exporters

Apple export season has begun. But suppliers and exporters are not very optimistic. Fruit growers from Paro say both quantity and quality of the apple is poor compared to last year. In addition the price has gone down because of bumper apple harvest in India.

His Majesty appoints constitutional post holders

His Majesty the King has re-appointed Dasho Kunzang Wangdi as the Chief Election Commissioner, Dasho Neten Zangmo as the Chairperson of Anti-Corruption Commission and Ugyen Chhewang as Auditor General yesterday.
