The Prime Minister said Meet the People programme is successful as it has given opportunities for people to meet the ministers. He also added that wherever possible they have tried to help. Where it is not possible, Lyonchhen said they have tried to explain the polices and laws to the people.
He was speaking to the Media at Meet the Press, yesterday.
“Some of the cases are transfer, where possible we try to help where it is difficult we let them know.” Lyonchhen said those who have approached them have compelling reasons. “But they should know that it is not going to be easy. Having explained the difficulties we do forward their letter to agencies concerned. Some of the cases are from corporate sectors, though they are outside civil service, it does not prevent us from requesting agencies to look into the appeal, we don’t say that they have to .”
The Economic Affairs Minister, Norbu Wangchuk, said people in general think the programme will immediately address their grievances. “Yes in some cases and no in some.” He said through grievances they understand the policies that are not able to touch people’s lives. “It gives us time to reflect what we need to do with policies, rules and regulations”.
Meanwhile, unemployment is the reason why majority of people come for ‘Meet the People’ programme. The 19th Meet the People programme, today, also saw quite a number of youth seeking jobs.
Other than unemployment, the programme today, saw a good mix of issues ranging from census, people seeking scholarships to those asking donations.
They were told by the Prime Minister that he will instruct the concerned Ministry to look into the matter. Since the programme began in August, more than 350 cases have been registered, of which the more than 95 cases got immediately redressed.
‘Meet the people’ is one of the programs the government had pledged to initiate during their campaign. Since the inception of the programme, ministers including the Prime Minister, have been meeting with people every Saturday.
