A mass campaign was organised to collect the giant snails in Gyalpoizhing, yesterday. Students, teachers, officials and residents of Gyalpoizhing and Lingmithang gathered to rid the area of snails.
Eyes fixed on the ground, people spread across vast area collecting snails. Irrespective of its sizes, the giant African land snails were collected to prevent it from further spreading to other places.
The snails collected were dumped into a pit with salt. According to officials, hand picking and salting was only the best possible option to control its population.
As part of the campaign, locals were also briefed on the safety measures. People of Gyalpoizhing will now continue picking of snails on a regular basis.
