The curriculum of the technical institutes will see a major shift. It will now become competency based. As a pilot project, the department of human resources launched the new curriculum for plumbing, carpentry, auto mechanic and masonry from this month.
The new curriculum is based on occupational skills. The old curriculum focused more on theory. The trainees will be assessed both theoretically and practically.
It will not be compulsory for trainees to stay two years in the institute. They can leave after they have gained employable skills.
It will allow trainees to continue their training even after getting employment.
The officiating director of the Department of Occupation Standards said external assessors will be involved from designing of the curriculum to assessment. The first batch of external assessors have already been trained.
New curriculum will also be developed for all the courses offered by the technical institutes within the 10th Five Year Plan. The institutes offer courses in electrical, mechanical, carpentry, construction, furniture making, computer hardware, driving and Zorig Chusum or the 13 traditional arts and crafts.
