Currently, there are 272 people living with HIV in Bhutan. The first case of HIV in Bhutan was detected in 1993 through routine medical screening. Bhutan has detected a total of 346 people with HIV.
More cases of HIV are being detected in recent years.
This is attributed to voluntary counseling and testing services and other preventive, treatment and care components being integrated with the health delivery system.
According to a report from the UN AIDS, 30 percent of the total detected cases are housewives. One of the concerns is the emergence of multiple sex partners among the society.
