The Bhutan Council for School Examinations and Assessment (BCSEA) declared the results of the Bhutan Certificate of Secondary Education (BCSE) Class X examination for the academic year 2020, today. The top three positions have been bagged by girls. Close to 6,900 girls and more than 5,900 boys appeared in the BCSE.

Srijana Giri from Ugyen Academy topped the BCSE with 94.6 per cent followed by Rigzay Lhamo from Lungtenzampa Middle Secondary School in second place with 94 per cent. There are three girls in third place – Kinzang Tshomo from Damphu Central School, Yeshi Tsheyang Zam from Ugyen Academy and Namkha Dema from Gesarling Central School with 93.6 per cent each.

Amid the pandemic with school closures time and again, the overall pass percentage hit 96.57 per cent, an increase of 2.94 per cent from last year.

“I was a bit worried about how our students will cope with the examination due to the ongoing pandemic. But then I’m very happy today to declare that they have done extremely well. Even if you look at the pass percentage this time it’s 96.57 %, in other words, for every 100 students who appeared for the Class X exam, only three students failed. And also I was worried there is some kind of perception that due to no cut-off point, our students might be a little complacent, and they may not do well, but they did very well,” said JB Rai, the Education Minister.

A total of 12,925 students from 130 schools (124 government and six private schools)) registered for the BCSE examination. And 12,813 appeared in the examination, of which 12,374 passed and 439 students could not make it through.

This year about 1,800 students will be absorbed in private schools. Students can choose the private school and can now start the online registration however students have to follow the criteria set by the school. The admission in the government school will start upon completion of the admission in the private schools based on the intake capacity of the schools.
