The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who addressed the Bhutan’s joint-sitting of Parliament said a change in the government in India will not affect Bhutan-India ties. He said the relations between Bhutan and India is historic and that the new government is committed to strengthen it further.
Narendra Modi said India stands committed to each other’s progress and happiness. Mr. Modi compared Bhutan-India relations to milk and water. “You cannot separate milk and water.”
The Indian Prime Minister also said as much as India prospers, so will Bhutan.
Narendra Modi said after he became the Prime Minister, he didn’t have to think too much about where his first foreign trip would be. “I feel fortunate to be amongst you.”
The Indian Prime Minister also applauded Bhutan’s smooth transition from monarchy to democracy. He said it shows maturity in governance.
The other issue he touched upon was hydropower. He said hydropower cooperation is part of collective efforts against global warming.
He also suggested that the Himalayan states and Bhutan could do a special sports meet on a regular basis. “Sportsman spirit brings happiness.”
“Can our satellite technology and space technology help Bhutan better? Our scientists should think about this.”
He also said Bhutan has potential for tourism to grow. Narendra Modi added that tourism unites where as terrorism divides.
The Indian Prime Minister also said he is happy that Bhutan spends on education. “Bhutan is looking after its future generation.”
He said India is committed to good relations with its neighbours. “If we walk two steps ahead, we too feel like walking those steps and supporting you”.
