Bhutan observes Olympic Day

Olympic-DayCoinciding with the birth anniversary of the Third Druk Gyalpo, today, the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) observed its Olympic Day. This year, the event was organized at Gedu, Chhukha. His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, the President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee graced the event.

His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck was received with the traditional chipdrel ceremony followed by Marchang.

As the Chhukha Dzongdag welcomed the Guests, he also highlighted the benefits of playing various sports.Olympic-Day.

The Secretary General of the BOC, Sonam Karma Tshering, said value education can be taught through games and sports. “Sports and games can inculcate in our youth all the values integral to our national philosophy of Gross National Happiness such as sportsmanship, cooperation, teamwork, respect, fairness, responsibility, resilience, giving and receiving support, leadership and fellowship.”

After the opening, events unfolded after a five kilometre run.

Basketball, boxing, and indigenous games among others were organised by the Federations and Associations affiliated with the BOC.

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Committee. BOC was established in 1983.
