Norbu Wangzom, Jomotshangka Martshala MP questioned  Minister for the Ministry of Information and Communication (MOIC) regarding the high deduction on data charges by Bhutan Telecom (BT). This was raised during the  NA question hour Session. She also raised the issue on the government’s pledge regarding the free WIFI.

“Recently people have been complaining about the high internet data charges. it has even been posted on social media. people are complaining that data packages are not even lasting a day which is not normal. we want to know why this is happening and what the ministry is doing. we would also like to know what is happening with the government’s pledge of providing free WIFI,” she asked.

On behalf of the MOIC minister, the Economic Affairs minister said that the high deduction on data charges is not true.

“The high deduction on data charges is not true. The Ministry enquired with BICMA which reported that BT had not done anything wrong and there were no exorbitant charges. The high deduction on the data package could not be true as BICMA strictly monitors it. Recently BT has come up with a  special new data package. It was clearly mentioned in the Kuensel. The data deduction for the weekend plan and late night plan seems to actually deduct low amount and instead we should be thankful to Bhutan Telecom,” The Minister said.

For her supplementary query on the free Wi-Fi, the minister said he has no concrete answer.

The other questions were on the plan to increase the national wage rate, transport master plan of Thimphu thromde, Vehicle quota for every household and hiring of super specialist from Bangladesh.
