Nurses are the backbone of health care provision in almost every country. To acknowledge the hard work, long shift hours and emotional pressure they go through in their daily routine, the global community observes May 12 as the International Nurses Day.

Here in the capital, nurses from National Referral Hospital along with the students of Faculty of Nursing and Public Health gathered to celebrate the day themed, ‘Nursing: A voice to lead – Achieving the sustainable development Goal.’

The President of Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan, Dr. K.P Tshering highlighted the important role played by nurses.

“Nursing is one of the most important aspect of care because it is the nurses who care the patient most of the time. Doctors just come for checkups may be only in the morning or evening. But nurses have more contact with the patients.”

With the lighting of butter lamps, the nurses and the nursing students pledged to maintain and elevate the standard of profession, loyalty to the work and devotion towards their service.

Every year, the day is being observed on the birth anniversary of the founder of nursing, Florence Nightingale.

Today there are over 1000 nurses in the country.
