Farm road- DoR-Handing-TakingThe gewog centre roads of the 11 gewogs in Samdrup Jonkhar now falls under the care of the Department of Roads (DoR).

About 119.1km of farm roads were recently handed over to the Department by the Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag.

This means, all the maintenance and widening works have to be done by the Department henceforth.

According to Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongda, Goling Tshering, since almost all the gewogs are connected with farm roads, it is difficult for the dzongkhag to maintain them.

He added, handing over the farm roads will spare the dzonkhang and the gewog with more time for other development activities.

Some of the local leaders also shared the same view.

Immediate Plans

In the meantime, the Department of Roads in Samdrup Jongkhar has plans to maintain almost all the farm roads in the dzongkhag.

To start with, the department will black top the Martshala farm road till the gewog centre.

The Chief Engineer from the DoR, Samdrup Jongkhar, Dorji Gyeltshen said, “Currently, the existing farm roads in Samdrup Jongkhar are not up to the standard of 5.1m formation wide. Most of the farm roads are less than 4m wide.”

He said, some roads are very steep. There are immediate plans to correct these flaws.

Currently, out of 11 gewogs in Samdrup Jongkhar, only Lauri gewog is not connected with a farm road.
