PM-Excavators in place of cashThe government is proposing to provide excavators in the Dzongkhags to construct new farm roads rather than providing cash. The Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay, shared the proposal with the local government officials and civil servants of Trashigang and Trashi Yangtse Dzongkhags.

The Prime Minister said the idea is to save cost, time and construct better quality farm roads in the villages.

“How about buying and sending new excavators and repairing the old excavators? Likewise we will have to send the operators and compressors. And how about creating a separate pool of money in the Dzongkhags, similar to that of gewog development grant, solely to meet the expenditure for the construction of the farm roads?”

Lyonchhen said he discussed the idea with the Cabinet Ministers. “And now I am proposing the idea to you all.”

The Prime Minister said the proposal should not worry the contractors since there are many other contract works for them.

While a few local leaders expressed their concerns, many welcomed the news. However, the proposal, local leaders said will need more deliberation and consultation with the public.
