Bhutan has set a new Guinness World Record after 108 stupas were built and consecrated simultaneously across multiple sites in just nine hours, bringing together hundreds of volunteers in a collective display of faith and unity.
The initiative began at three in the morning on 1st November. Volunteers, working in teams of 20 to 23, built the stupas simultaneously at designated sites along the Mau River in Gelephu. Monks then performed consecration ceremonies at each site.
The combination of simultaneous construction and consecration made the undertaking a first of its kind for Guinness World Records.
According to Swapnil, Adjudicator with Guinness World Records, the achievement had to meet specific requirements, including a minimum of 85 newly built stupas constructed at the same time and consecrated according to local traditions.

“We have set a minimum requirement of at least 85 that should be done at the same time. What this record essentially means is that the stupas have to be newly built. Now the main aspect of the record was also that once they are newly built, they undergo the rituals as per your traditions. We got this verified, witnessed by monks present at each of the spots. We got the documentation and videos for it and, after verifying the complete evidence and fitting into our guidelines, I am delighted to confirm that this is now a new Guinness World Record title.”
Guinness officials also praised the initiative, describing it as unprecedented. Swapnil said the speed and quality of construction were impressive.
“I am happy that the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority came up with this type of an idea which was never done before. So, congratulations for thinking something out of the box. I think this is something which, for me personally, would be a memorable record because this is a kind of record or event I have never seen before.”
Beyond the world record, the achievement reflects Bhutan’s spiritual heritage and the collective spirit of its people. It also offers an early expression of the values envisioned for Gelephu Mindfulness City.
