The Bashochhu Waterfall in Wangdue Phodrang is drawing more visitors after the site was upgraded with viewing decks, access steps and other basic facilities. The improvements have made the site safer and easier to access, with about five thousand people visiting the site since the facilities were completed in July this year.
For years, visitors came to Basochhu Waterfall for its dramatic views, despite the steep, rocky and slippery terrain.
Now, a newly built viewing deck gives visitors a safer place to take in the waterfall, take photographs and enjoy the cool spray from the cascading water.
The site has also been equipped with access steps and handrails, making the area more accessible and comfortable for visitors.
The improvements are also bringing visitors from beyond Wangdue Phodrang.
“I had only seen Bashochhu Waterfall on TikTok and in movies. But today, I have had the opportunity to see the waterfall in person. The site has been improved significantly, making it more comfortable and convenient for visitors. Earlier, the area was quite difficult to access because of its steep and rocky terrain,” said Chhimi Eden, Tsirang.
“Some of the pole foundations appear to have become loose due to heavy water flow. Overall, the facilities have made the site much more convenient. It would be even better if the footpath could be improved. However, once we reach the site, it is quite comfortable for visitors,” said Rinchen, Tsirang.
Officials, however, say the deck can accommodate only 15 people at a time and urge visitors to follow the safety measures.
“I remind visitors not to make excessive noise at the waterfall site, as it is considered inappropriate and could pose risks. Visitors are generally aware of the local beliefs and the importance of maintaining peace at the site. They say that unusual signs are sometimes observed when excessive noise is made in the area. Therefore, most visitors are now aware of the need to maintain silence and respect the site,” said Kinzang Namgay, Caretaker, Basochhu Waterfall, Gase Tshowom, Wangdue Phodrang.
The Wangdue Phodrang district administration initiated the site development with financial support from the Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project Authority.
The project cost about Nu 1.4 M. The Technical Training Institute in Kuruthang and De-Suups from the district carried out the construction.
Beyond improving visitor experience, the development is expected to create opportunities for the communities. They are now able to sell their produce at the site, allowing them to earn an income without travelling to markets elsewhere.
More facilities are planned for the site.
According to a district official, a standard cafeteria, glasshouse and restrooms are expected to be developed within this financial year with financial support from Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC).
The waterfall is considered particularly attractive from June to September when the water flow is at its strongest.
As more visitors make their way to the waterfall, local leaders are also calling for responsible behaviour at the site. They say littering, excessive noise and the use of tobacco products should be avoided to protect the surroundings and respect the local beliefs associated with the waterfall.
