Spasmo Proxyvon Plus, SP+ capsules made up nearly 80 per cent of all drug trafficking cases handled by the Office of the Attorney General, OAG, in the last financial year. According to the OAG’s annual report, the office received almost 400 drug-related cases during the period.
In the 2025-26 financial year, the OAG handled 279 cases involving the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
SP+ capsules accounted for 220 of these cases, making them by far the most commonly trafficked substance. That means SP+ featured in almost four out of every five drug trafficking cases handled by the OAG.
In comparison, brown sugar and heroin together accounted for 31 cases, while N10 tablets featured in 28 cases.
According to news reports, porous borders, high demand and the potential for quick profits have contributed to the trafficking of SP+ capsules.
The OAG also recorded more than 70 cases related to substance abuse during the same period.
Overall, soft drugs accounted for 284 cases, compared to 31 cases involving hard drugs.
Soft drugs include substances such as marijuana, hashish, and certain pharmaceutical drugs, while hard drugs include substances such as brown sugar and heroin.
To address these issues, the Police has established dedicated drug crackdown units and deployed trained drug-detecting canine units.
The police also carry out mandatory drug testing for commercial drivers, along with random drug tests.
The OAG has also established a Drug Prevention and Prosecution Division to provide specialised prosecution and legal expertise in drug-related cases.
Although the country continues to strengthen its response to drug-related crime, authorities say tackling drug abuse and trafficking remains a challenge.
