PM-led task force to coordinate Super El Niño response

Think of the Pacific Ocean as a giant engine that helps control the world’s weather. When that engine gets warmer than usual, it changes weather patterns in many countries. This phenomenon is called El Niño. Although it develops thousands of kilometres away from Bhutan, it can disrupt weather patterns, according to the National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology. The government is stepping up nationwide preparedness as Bhutan braces for the possible impacts of Super El Niño.

According to the NCHM, Super El Niño, which started last month, could have higher impacts on communities in November and December.

For Bhutan, it often means hotter weather, less rain, drier soil, and a higher chance of drought, water shortages, and forest fires.

Agriculture is expected to be one of the most affected sectors.

Reduced rainfall during the cropping season could lower crop yields, increase irrigation demand, and place additional pressure on water resources.

The Department of Agriculture is encouraging farmers to adopt water-saving and climate-resilient farming practices.

A National Super El Niño Task Force, chaired by the Prime Minister, has been established to coordinate response efforts across ministries and agencies.

“It is expected to affect both drinking water and irrigation supplies. We have tasked the infrastructure and transport ministry with assessing water management measures. The ministry is evaluating the availability of water tankers, feasibility of supplying water by truck, number of trucks that can be deployed, and the cost of tankers in all 20 districts,” said Tshering, Home Minister.

The NCHM is continuously monitoring weather conditions and will issue regular updates through official platforms. Please stay informed and remain vigilant.

“The number of glacial lakes in Bhutan has increased from 567 to 620. With more glacial lakes across the country and rising temperatures, it is difficult to predict where a flood or a GLOF could occur,” said Karma Dupchu, Director General, National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology.

The government says all agencies are working together to minimise the impact of any potential El Niño-related disasters and ensure the country’s preparedness.
