Residents in Gelephu may soon have a new place to unwind and spend time with family and friends. The town’s former vegetable market is being transformed into a public park, creating a greener community space.

Spread across 1.4 acres, the project began last month and is expected to be completed within this month. The redevelopment comes more than a year after vegetable vendors were relocated to the newly constructed Gelephu Bounty Market.

Workers are currently laying carpet grass imported from India, while ornamental trees and plants sourced locally are also being planted across the area.

Once completed, the park will feature shaded resting spaces, seating areas and landscaped greenery aimed at providing residents and visitors with a peaceful environment to relax and socialise.

Officials say the initiative is part of the broader vision of the Gelephu Mindfulness City project, which plans to introduce several public parks and open spaces across the town.

“Under the Gelephu Mindfulness City plans, around five major parks are proposed across Gelephu. This one is a smaller community space within the core town area where residents can meet, relax, and spend time with family and friends,” said Tshering Norbu, Gelephu Thrompon, Sarpang.

Residents have welcomed the initiative, saying the transformation will improve both the appearance and livability of the town.

“The park will be a very good place for all residents, especially elderly people, to come here, rest and spend time,” said Lachuman Monger, a resident.

The park is being developed at an estimated cost of around two million ngultrum, with labour contributions from the De-suups.
