Yangtshel Wangyel, a student of the Royal Academy in Paro, has won the 18th Golden Youth Award 2026. He stood out among 80 participants from 20 districts and will receive a scholarship to continue his studies abroad. Her Majesty Queen Mother Tseyring Pem Wangchuck, along with members of the Royal Family, graced the closing ceremony.

Following the week-long competition, 15-year-old Yangtshel Wangyel, originally from Trashigang and currently studying at the Royal Academy in Paro, was declared the winner of the 18th edition of the award.

“I feel that I could just wake up and this could all be a dream, but it’s not. This excitement welling up inside me right now, I can’t describe it in words. But what I can describe is the immense amount of gratitude I have for Her Majesty and the country. I pledge to continuously honour our country and continuously learn for the country’s growth and benefit.”

Ugyen Rigsel of Lamgong Higher Secondary School in Paro was named the first runner-up.

“This is only possible due to the seamless cooperation from the YDF, the Young Volunteers in Action, and the project Bhutan, for allowing us to join this program known as the Golden Youth Award. And I cannot say this in words, but everyone here has been so great to me, and I believe that I can grow up, aspire, and continue to one day serve my country in the best light possible and also make my family happy.”

Meanwhile, Tshering Dorje of Gongzim Ugyen Dorji Central School in Haa secured the second runner-up position, while Sangay Drukda of Phobjikha Central School in Wangdue Phodrang finished as the third runner-up.

Inspired by the vision and foresight of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Golden Youth Award camp aims to motivate and reward outstanding students, encouraging youth to strive for excellence in life.

The Golden Youth Award recognises young individuals who demonstrate exemplary character, leadership, service, and a commitment to bringing positive change to their communities.

Every year, more than 80 students from 20 districts gather in Thimphu to compete in the Golden Youth Award. Participants are assessed on academic performance, co-curricular activities, innovation, talent, and communication skills.

Since its inception in 2008, more than 1,500 students have participated in the programme, with 18 winners receiving full scholarships to pursue higher education abroad.
