Koufuku International Limited, a state-owned dairy processing enterprise based in Trashigang, has received a Three-Star GNH of Business Certificate. This is a mid-level rating that reflects above-average performance but areas that still need improvement. The company sources milk from 19 dairy groups across four eastern districts, supporting more than 1,000 rural households.

The company scored over 61 per cent in the Centre for Bhutan & GNH Studies’ national assessment, recognising its alignment with Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness values.

The evaluation was carried out across the nine domains of Gross National Happiness under the GNH of Business framework.

The rating shows strong performance in employee wellbeing, health, and time use. Employees reported high job satisfaction, workplace trust, job security, and a healthy work-life balance.

“Our assessment examined workplace infrastructure and facilities to ensure they meet standards of safety, accessibility, and employee well-being. We also evaluated the company’s contribution to local communities, including its role in creating employment opportunities, along with several other performance criteria,” said Karma Wangdi, Chief Research Officer, Centre for Bhutan & GNH Studies.

However, according to the assessment, governance systems and environmental practices still need improvement, especially in renewable energy use, waste management and board diversity, among others.

Company officials say the certification is both an honour and responsibility.

Over the next six months, they will improve governance and reporting. And within a year, they plan to roll out a proper environmental management system to cut waste management and reduce energy consumption.

Since the introduction in 2021, five companies have received the award, including Koufuku.

For a company, receiving the certificate is expected to serve as an incentive as well as a powerful brand carrying the impact of GNH.

Certification is valid for two years, after which companies must undergo reassessment to ensure continued progress.
