RENEW expands reach with new community centre in Pema Gatshel

With an aim to address gender-based violence, empower vulnerable individuals, and foster inclusive communities, RENEW is expanding its reach through additional community centres. With a new centre recently established in Pema Gatshel, the organisation now operates 14 such centres across the country. According to RENEW’s Annual Report, the existing ten centres handled nearly 1,300 cases last year.

In Pema Gatshel, cases of abuse and violence are often referred to the police, who then forward them to RENEW’s community centres. For victims, however, travelling long distances to seek help has been a challenge.

The former Dzongdag’s residence at Tshangtseri, which had remained vacant, has now been transformed into the RENEW office.

The centre was inaugurated recently with support from UNICEF.

With a community centre now within their district, people affected by abuse and violence can access support and safety closer to home.

Ugyen Lhundup, the centre’s manager said, “We will be providing counselling, legal aid, and community awareness programs. We also have a safe home within our centre for those who don’t feel secure in their own homes.”

The centre is also preparing to launch skill development programmes soon.

RENEW’s Community Centres serve as vital hubs offering counselling, case management, legal support, emergency shelter, and referrals for further assistance.
RENEW began establishing these centres in 2022.

The centres have become a symbol of hope and resilience for victims, fostering communities that are safe, inclusive, and free from violence.
