The Bhutan Bodybuilding Association is all set to host the 14th National Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship at the Clock Tower Square in Thimphu tomorrow. This year’s event will see 24 athletes competing in four categories, including a new category aimed at encouraging young athletes.

Final preparations are underway as the country’s top bodybuilders gear up for the national championship. Ahead of the big day, the Bhutan Bodybuilding Association held a coordination meeting today.

For the first time, the event will feature a Men’s Junior Bodybuilding category, introduced for athletes aged 18 to 21.

In the new category is 19-year-old Tshering Dendup. Having started training just five months ago, he says bodybuilding has changed the way he sees himself and his life.

“A friend introduced me to bodybuilding. After that first day, I was hooked. Seeing the senior athletes inspired me to make this my passion.”

Another young contender, 19-year-old college student Tshewang Dorji, says juggling classes and gym sessions hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it.

“At first, it was very difficult and required a lot of discipline. But seeing my own progress keeps me motivated to do better.”

Trainers and veteran athletes say the new category can play a crucial role in steering youth toward a healthier lifestyle.

“We’re thankful to the association for introducing this category. It gives youth a positive path at a time when many are getting into drugs and alcohol,” said Karma, Trainer.

According to the Bhutan Bodybuilding Association, the junior division will also help groom young talent for the World Bodybuilding Championship, which Bhutan will host in 2027.

“The primary purpose of having this is to encourage our youth. We have a young population, and this is a healthy way for them to engage in sports and lead a better lifestyle,” said Sonam Penjor (PhD), Vice President, Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation.

Among the four categories, only the Men’s Open Bodybuilding division will compete for the coveted Mr Bhutan title. Four top contenders, including seasoned athletes Sonam Phuntsho and Mahalal Rai, are among them.

“I’ve prepared well and I’m giving my best. Let’s see how the competition goes tomorrow. I look forward to the support of all my Bhutanese friends around the world as I aim to win the 14th Mr Bhutan title,” said Sonam Phuntsho, Participant, Men’s Open Bodybuilding.

“I’ve been preparing for about six months. I recently won gold at the South Asian Bodybuilding Championship, and I’m ready to give my best performance at the 14th Mr Bhutan,” said Mahalal Rai, Participant, Men’s Open Bodybuilding.

As excitement builds, the stage is set for a night of strength, discipline, and inspiration showcasing the best of Bhutanese bodybuilding talent.
