Bhutan’s Young Dragon Boys are set to make their mark in regional football. The U-17 national team left for Sri Lanka today to compete in the SAFF U-17 Championship. For the 23-member squad, this is more than just a tournament, it is a chance to test months of preparation, showcase young talent, and carry the nation’s hopes. The championship kicks off on Monday in Colombo and will conclude next Saturday.

The Young Dragon Boys held their final training session at the BFF Academy Football Ground this morning before departing earlier this evening. They have been training intensively for the past five months, dedicating two hours daily except Sundays in preparation for the tournament.

Leading the team is 16-year-old captain Deychog Drakar Dorji from Pema Gatshel, who is making his international debut. Although new to the global stage, Deychog has been playing for Paro FC since 2020. Currently in Class 10 at the BFF Academy, he is known for his commitment and leadership both on and off the pitch.

“It is a huge privilege to represent our country. Over the past few months, our training has been intense, and we are prepared physically, mentally, and emotionally. We have worked on team chemistry, sharpening our defense and improving our attacking transitions. Our coach has guided and motivated us, and we promise to fight till the very end. Every match is crucial, and I request all Bhutanese to support and cheer for us.”

According to the Head Coach, this squad has shown promising development compared to past years, giving hope for a stronger performance this time.

Hideharu Takahashi, Head Coach said, “We have prepared well. The team has played six practice matches, two against RTC, two with the U-19 squad, and two against India’s Sudeva Delhi Football Club. The boys have improved in both skill and discipline, and we are ready to give 100 per cent for Bhutan and for the Bhutanese.”

Bhutan has been drawn in Group B alongside six-time champions India, 2011 winners Pakistan, and the Maldives, while Group A features Bangladesh, Nepal, and host Sri Lanka.

The Young Dragons will begin their campaign against Pakistan on Tuesday, followed by matches against defending champion India on Friday, and the Maldives next Monday at the Racecourse International Stadium in Colombo.

In the group stage, each team will face the others once in a round-robin format, with the top two advancing to the semi-finals.

For Bhutan’s U-17 side, the journey ahead is not just about competing, but also about proving themselves on the regional stage. With months of preparation, the team now carries the hopes of the nation as they step onto the international arena in Sri Lanka.
