The long-anticipated data reduction plan now appears to be off track. Bhutan Telecom was set to implement the plan starting tomorrow. However, Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) has instructed the company to conduct a detailed study first, which is expected to take another month.
The cabinet approved a 50 per cent reduction in data charges in March this year, and it was planned to roll out tomorrow. However, that now seems unlikely.
Bhutan Telecom, which operates under Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), said its board reviewed the plan and submitted various implementation scenarios to DHI in May.
However, just last week, DHI has asked the telecom operator to conduct a detailed study on the impact and sustainability in the short, medium, and long term. Following this, the company wrote to the GovTech Agency requesting a one-month extension.
Once completed, the findings will be submitted to DHI for a final decision.
BBS tried to contact DHI for comment, but the company was unavailable.
With the plan now on hold, the public will have to wait for reduced data charges.
