To select four Judokas to represent the country at upcoming international judo competitions, an intensive Judo training camp, led by Judokas from Japan is underway in the capital. The ten-day programme is expected to offer rigorous sessions aimed at improving skills for both beginners and advanced practitioners.

21 young Judokas from various schools across Thimphu and eight from Gelephu Judo Club are participating in the training camp.

Kinley Pelden, a participant from Gelephu Judo Club said “From my side, I find it as a good opportunity to participate in future tournaments. From the training, I am learning new techniques which are good for our self-defence and health.”

Kuenga Singye Namgyel, a participant from Pelkhil School said “I felt very good and I saw a lot of improvements in my techniques because my sensei were there whenever I needed them and I feel more physically strong.”

There are two daily sessions.

Besides teaching new judo techniques, participants are offered activities and sessions designed to promote mental health.

Yuki Fukui, Head Coach of Bhutan Judo Association said “We do physical training as well but we focus on mental training by making them set goals for what to do next and make feedback after participating in some tournaments”

Purna Gurung, Assistant Coach of Bhutan Judo Association said “The main motive for organizing this event is for friendship and bonding. We do physical training and students have become strong from a young age of six to seven years old. They are well disciplined too.”

Mai Vander Scheer, Sensei, University of Tsukuba, Japan said “They are super eager to learn and when we teach them new techniques. They are learning fast and they want to absorb all knowledge and they have to thrive to  become good at Judo.”

As part of the camp, the three Japanese judokas conducted an introductory seminar on the revised International Judo Federation competition rules (2025-2028). This session is expected to help athletes understand key changes and improve their competitive performance.

Two boys and two girls will be selected to represent the country in future international judo competitions.

The chosen athletes will further undergo intensive training programme.
