Bhutan aspires to become an ICT-enabled knowledge-based society. Various initiatives are emerging to achieve this vision. To complement the government’s effort, the Bhutan Network Operators Group or btNOG is bringing together ICT professionals from both government and private sectors. During its annual conference held in the capital today, the voluntary group trained ICT professionals based on their requirements. The five-day workshop trained more than 90 ICT professionals in basic computer networking and cybersecurity.

During the workshop, ICT professionals were taught how to implement, operate, troubleshoot and support network.

The chairperson of btNOG highlighted that such workshops bring together ICT professionals and help them learn basic knowledge and best practices.

Jichen Thinley, the Chairperson said “Among all the ICT professionals, we are trying to build a community. Once we build that community, we ask them what kind of specialised training they require. These are very specific trainings and once they are done with the training, it’s not only teaching, it’s a hands-on simulated network they built in the lab during the five days course, which can be replicated in their workspace.”

Kinley Tenzin, an engineer at Tashi InfoComm Limited said “I expected to learn network and the internet, which is very necessary, and inevitable, and we cannot simply ignore these things. I think I have learned a lot.”

“We are being trained by really skilled personnel from outside. Throughout the workshop, I’ve learned various skills and things that are important to me as a network engineer. I think it will be really helpful for myself as well as for my co-workers. The knowledge that I’ve gained, I think I will be able to share with them as well,” said Tenzin Wangmo, Network Engineer of Bhutan Telecom Limited.

During the conference, the GovTech Agency shared insights into the ongoing ICT projects, including the National Cybersecurity Strategy, cybersecurity awareness programmes, and education, among others.

Established in 2014, btNOG is a voluntary group offering educational and operational forum for ICT network operators and professionals interested in the Internet.
