Bhutan’s mixed doubles badminton teams reach semifinals in South Asia Junior Championship

Bhutan’s under-15 and under-17 mixed doubles badminton teams are into the semifinals of the ongoing South Asia Regional Junior Championship 2024 in Pakistan. They will face Sri Lanka in the semifinals tomorrow.

Out of seven matches played today across different categories, Bhutan emerged winners in four categories.

In the under-15 mixed doubles quarterfinals, Sonam Phuentsho Tsheten and Yangchen Dolkar defeated the Maldives 22-20 and 21-15 in straight sets.

Likewise, in the under-17 mixed doubles quarterfinals, Ngawang Rigsel Jurmey and Kritty Gurung also won against the Maldives in straight sets. They defeated their opponents 21-6 and 21-3.

In the women’s under-15 singles Round of 16 match, Yangchen Dolkar won against her Maldivian opponent 21-5 and 21-2. However, she lost to Pakistan in the quarterfinals.

Likewise, Kritty Gurung was defeated by her Sri Lankan opponent in the women’s under-17 Round of 16 match.

In the men’s singles matches, both Sonam Phuentsho Tsheten and Ngawang Rigsel Jurmey lost to their Sri Lankan and Nepali opponents.

The Bhutan Badminton Federation sent four players to participate in the regional tournament. The finals will be played on Thursday in Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
