The Department of Tourism has initiated a bus beautification project of five public transport buses travelling to the eastern districts. The five buses display the authentic culture and tradition of each of the five districts. Vibrant colours and eco-tourism promotion messages are being displayed on the buses. According to the tourism department, the beautification is intended to promote biodiversity and Bhutan as a model eco-tourism destination.

Five public transport buses travelling to and from Lhuentse, Monggar, Tashi Yangtse, Tashigang, and Zhemgang were beautified.

The colourful buses are adorned with striking artworks of black-necked cranes, Ludlow’s Bhutan glory, red panda, golden langur, exotic birds, and kishuthara patterns, each representing the rich culture of respective districts.

“What we are trying to do through this bus beautification is to convey and advocate the message of the importance of protecting our biodiversity, and by protecting our biodiversity, how this will help us to fulfil or achieve the environmental conservation objectives of the country. And also we are hoping this will impact and influence the promotion of Bhutan as an ecotourism destination,” said Dorji Dhradhul, the director general of the tourism department.

According to the Department of Tourism, the initiative is to not only showcase the beauty and biodiversity of Bhutan but also to inspire travellers to become responsible stewards of the environment.

The five-year project is initiated in collaboration with VAST Bhutan, with support from the Global Environment Facility and United Nations Development Fund ecotourism project.
