It is becoming increasingly expensive to put eggs on the menu. And this is especially true if you are in Sarpang. After seeing lower-than-usual prices in the last few months, egg price in Sarpang district is now picking up. The excess supply of eggs in the market saw a decline in prices throughout the country since last October.

Narapati Basnath, a poultry farm owner at Dolongang in Dekiling Gewog sold eggs at Nu 1,200 per carton for the past four months. The same would have otherwise fetched him between Nu 1,850 to 2,000.

Narapati now sells at Nu 2,240 per carton from his farm. The market rate for a carton of eggs in Gelephu town is Nu 3,400. A carton has seven trays of the egg.

“In the past, I incurred huge losses with birds dying and the cost of feeds high. Right now, business is faring well. After procuring carton boxes, feeds, and spending on travel, I get to keep a good amount in hand,” said Narapati Basnath, a poultry farmer.

“We had a difficult time with a high cost of feeds and no demand for eggs. We incurred huge losses. Now it is sufficient to feed the birds and for travel expenses,” said Sudasari Suberi.

The high demand for eggs in Sarpang is due to decreased production in the district.

Seven poultry farmers from Shompangkhag and Dekiling Gewogs closed their farms citing rising cost of feed and transportation since November, last year.
