Save the Children to support Bhutan in strengthening climate resilience

Arshad Malik, Asia Regional Director, Save the Children

As the world warms and climate change risks increase, Save the Children plans to invest more in climate-resilient development in Bhutan. According to the Asia Regional Director of Save the Children, this is to safeguard the future of children, who are most vulnerable to climate hazards.

Arshad Malik, the Asia Regional Director of Save the Children International, met the Prime Minister and the cabinet regarding climate financing, disaster risk reduction, and early warning systems today.

“One of the learnings we have is that while the early warning and there were some efforts put in on early warning and anticipatory action, they are not good enough to meet the changing climate environment. So we want to be that technical partner for the Royal Government of Bhutan, where we provide skills in disaster management, disaster preparedness, risk reduction, climate financing and anticipatory actions,” said Arshad Malik, the Asia Regional Director of Save the Children.

The organisation is exploring strategic opportunities to enhance inclusive, quality Early Childhood Care and Development and youth skills development in the country.

“At the moment, we are working with the Royal Government of Bhutan, particularly on ECCD, early childhood development. That will remain a key priority for us. But on top of that, under education, we are also looking at technical and vocational education and youth skill development, connecting it with employability and connecting the youth with the global market,” added the Asia Regional Director.

He added that Bhutan needs to bridge the gap between rural and urban areas in education and other sectors, while also promoting gender equality. Save the Children also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen partnership with Bhutan to advance child health, education, and overall well-being across Bhutan.
