Nepal’s Dr Sanduk Ruit wins Isa Award for Service to Humanity

The National Order of Merit, Gold, recipient Dr Sanduk Ruit has won the Isa Award for Service to Humanity, a top civilian honour of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Dr Sanduk is an internationally renowned eye-surgeon from Nepal. The award which is given every two years was announced at a ceremony in Bahrain’s capital Manama, recently. The Isa Award for Service to Humanity organisation, established in 2009, has been presenting this award since 2013.

The globally recognized Nepali ophthalmologist is the recipient of the fifth edition of the award.

He will be awarded a million US dollars, a gold medal and a certificate next month.

His innovation in treating patients with cataracts and the invention of lenses at affordable rates have enabled millions of people across the globe, especially in developing countries see the world.

Dr Sanduk Ruit also received the National Order of Merit, Gold, from His Majesty The King in 2015 in recognition of his services to Bhutan. Dr Sanduk has conducted modern cataract surgery and training in various parts of Bhutan since 2000 and has restored sight to hundreds of patients. Dr Sanduk has also assisted in bringing Human Papillomavirus vaccines which help prevent cervical cancer, for young girls in Bhutan.
