The Technical Training Institute at Samthang in Wangdue Phodrang can now enroll more trainees with the new automobile workshop and three student hostels. The new infrastructure facilities were inaugurated yesterday. Constructed at a cost of Nu 130 M, the construction was funded by the government and the Asian Development Bank.

The new two-storied building has a spacious workshop area for practical classes that can accommodate more than four hundred trainees.

The upper floor houses general administration, laboratories and classrooms with interactive screen boards and modern amenities. Likewise, the new hostels can accommodate more than three hundred students.

“Since the hostels were very small, we had bunk beds which is why too many trainees were in one room. And during summer, our trainees had to come out in the evening to avoid the heat. Even the training workshop was too small,” said Sangay Tshewang, the institute’s Principal.

Currently, the institute offers three major automobile courses on driving light and heavy vehicles and earth-moving operators to about 250 students.

The course duration ranges from six months to two years. The institute plans to include a course on hybrid and electrical technology.

“So, hybrid and electrical technology is one course that we are going to start very soon at the national diploma course level. We are going to have heavy earth-moving technicians very soon. We are also going to have electric car technicians and are going to start with paramedic driver and backhoe loader,” added the Principal.

The new infrastructure facilities are expected to resolve the institute’s low student intake which was due to limited student boarding facilities.
