People living in Hoomdar and Jewangolai under Tingtibi in Zhemgang are complaining of pollution from a blacktop mixing plant set up near their homes. The residents are worried the fumes from the plant could harm their health as well as damage their crops.

According to the residents, the plant was set up between the two places about a month ago. And since then, about 50 residents have been suffering from dust pollution and bad smell caused by the mixing plant.

“We depend on agriculture. We are worried it might damage our crops,” said Thinley Wangdi, a resident of Hoomdar.

“We would like to request the concerned authorities to at least control the smell and dust pollution from the plant,” said Guru Tshewang, a resident of Jewangolia in Tingtibi.

Meanwhile, some said the Dzongkhag administration has not been monitoring the works.

“Once the approval is given, it’s the job of the officials to monitor the site,” said Thinley Wangdi, a resident of Tingtibi.

BBS tried to contact the proprietor of the plant but he was not available. The Dzongkhag administration also refused to comment on the issue.

It was learnt that the plant was set up to supply blacktop mixture for the ongoing internal blacktopping works in the town and other roads in the dzongkhag.
