So far, farmers cooperatives and youth groups in Chhukha have been supplying their local products to schools in their community. However, hereon, they can diversify their market as well as products. They now have a proper sales outlet at Gedu. It was inaugurated yesterday.

From vegetables – fresh and dry to flours, cakes, and local cookies, residents of Gedu and travelers along the Thimphu_Phuntsholing highway will have choices of local products to choose from, in the new sales point.

About 11 farm and youth groups from 11 gewogs will operate in the new sales outlet. A member of Sanam Nyamley Tshogdey, Sangay Lhamo said their group will collect local products from their gewog and help market them. “I am hopeful this initiative will benefit all of us here.”

Likewise, other groups will collect the products from their respective gewogs and sell them in the outlet.

According to a member of the Maedtabkha Youth group DechenYangden, such a sales point provides them an avenue to properly market our products. She said that it will immensely benefit youth in her community.

As per dzongkhag officials, the platform will be a milestone in agriculture development and marketing in the dzongkhag.

The dzongkhag’s Senior Dzongrab, Sherub Dorji said the outlet will provide a platform to youth in rural areas to market their agricultural and livestock products. “Not only they will generate income, but it will also provide them employment opportunities.”

The dzongkhag constructed the sales outlet worth Nu 9 M through the agriculture ministry’s Food Security and Agriculture Productivity project. The World Bank funded the project.

For now, except for utility bills, the users won’t have to pay any rent.

Meanwhile, a similar sales outlet will be constructed in Dagana, Haa, Sarpang, and Samtse dzongkhags.
