US soldiers guarding Kabul airport

One of the Bhutanese working for the United Nations is still in Afghanistan. He was planning to leave for New York on a commercial flight on Thursday. However, with all the chaos at the Kabul international airport and commercial flights suspended, his possibility of leaving Afghanistan looks difficult.

Like him around, 130 people working for the United Nations are stuck in Kabul. They are safe for now in the UN compound.

But they are not sure when will the next relief flight be.  Sources say their only hope, for now, is an air bridge that the UN is trying to fly in the UN compound to extract UN staff to Almaty in Kazakhstan.

The US will complete pulling out their troops from Afghanistan and end the evacuations on Tuesday.

And after the withdrawal of International Militaries, sources say there may not be another opportunity to extract the UN staff. Most of the NATO countries ended their evacuation by yesterday.

According to the Aljazeera, two suicide bombers killed 175 people including, 13 members of the US military at Kabul airport amid an evacuation effort on 26th August.

The Islamic State in Khorasan Province (ISKP), the Afghanistan affiliate of ISIS claimed responsibility for the brutal attack. International media reports that the ISKP attacked the airport to discredit its rival, the Taliban.

During the attack, few damages were reported on the UN compound. Despite the blasts and injuries, evacuation flights resumed yesterday.

BBC reports that the US Military believes to have killed a planner of the Islamic State group in a drone strike today. The US attack was to prevent future ISKP attacks.

The Taliban want the UN program to continue and the UN Secretary-General also wants the UN to stay and deliver the programs.

However, media reports that now the International organization including the UN fear the ISKP attack. Since Afghanistan currently doesn’t have a government, the safety and security of the international organization are not guaranteed.
