Prayers echoed across Patabari in Sarpang today as His Holiness the Je Khenpo presided over the Salang Tendrel for the establishment of Dewachen Spiritual Centre. Set across about 30 acres of land, the project aims to create a place for Buddhist learning and spiritual practice in Gelephu Mindfulness City. The first phase is expected to be completed by 2029.
With sacred offerings, ritual prayers and blessings from His Holiness the Je Khenpo, the ground was prepared for a new spiritual landmark in the south.
Joining the ceremony were Lam Neten and Drubpoen from 20 districts, along with about 200 monks.
The prayers will continue from tomorrow till Sunday. The Tshugla Lopen will lead Kurim prayers for the successful completion of the project, while more than a thousand devotees from across the country are expected to take part in the three-day programme.
The vision is to create more than a temple.
Jamyang Jampa Gyeltshen, Project Coordinator of Dewachen Spiritual Centre, said: “In line with His Majesty’s vision for Gelephu Mindfulness City, this project aims to create a place where people can experience the land of bliss, or the pure realm, as described in Buddha’s teachings. The centre will house various temples and sacred statues, as well as dedicated spaces for monks and nuns to practise Dharma, meditate and study. It will also welcome international practitioners.”
The project is estimated to cost between USD 30 and 100 M.
The project coordinator added: “We aim to complete the first phase of the project by 2029. The entire project will be developed in three to four phases. The remaining phases are expected to take at least another three to five years, although full completion could take up to seven to nine years.”
For residents of Sompangkha Gewog, the project brings a sense of pride and a new connection to the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City.
Ashman Rai, Shompangkha Mangmi in Sarpang, said: “Not only the residents of Kencholing, but the entire community of Shompangkha Gewog is excited to welcome the Dewachen Spiritual Centre. This is the first project of its kind in our village and also the first major spiritual project under GMC in the Sarpang region. We feel very happy and proud to be part of this development.”
For the people of Sompangkha, it is more than a new development. It is a source of pride and the hope of seeing their village become part of a growing spiritual destination in Gelephu Mindfulness City.
