Tsirang District Court sentenced a 34-year-old man for two months in prison for causing a false alarm in the community. The judgement was passed today. He can, however, pay in lieu of the prison term.

The man played with firecrackers on the evening of September 13, which coincided with the no-campaign period for the Primary Round of Third National Assembly elections.

The sound from the explosion alarmed the community and caused them to be suspicious. The village Tshogpa called the police and the man was arrested on the same night.

The police forwarded the case to the court on October 10.

The man, in his statement to the police, had said his friends gave him the firecrackers. It was meant to be used for chasing away monkeys attacking his crops.

But he decided to play with them that evening for fun.
